Bassegoda is the most emblematic Alt Empordà peak. It is located in L'Alta Garrotxa and has a great hiking tradition. Standing at 1,373 metres, it houses a great forest diversity on its slopes: holm oak, oak, beech and river forests (alders, willow, etc.). Its brooks and watercourses are full of life and have traditionally been a highly-prized fishing spot. The architectural heritage is remarkable as, despite present abandon, the area experienced a very prosperous period with coal mining. Countless farmhouses and hamlets existed in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Romanesque mountain chapels are extraordinarily beautiful and one of the highest densities in the area.
