La Pubilla Cork Tree

La Pubilla Cork Tree (Quercus suber) is a very impressive cork tree has a vry thick stump and is undoubtedly the thickest and oldest in Maçanet. Characteristics: At ground level the stump is 7 m and the body is 5.2 m around with a 2 m diameter trunk. Conditions: The Pubilla, is a simple, old tree which has stopped growing. It grows in rocky terrain and the thick roots have had to spread out to find good terrain and water to stay alive. More information: Although it may not seem so today, around 60 years ago there was an orchard and small spring at the foot which were run by the farmer at Can Vinyes. This is the origin of the necessary nutrients and humidity that have made it possible to grow to these dimensions. The tree has been declared monumental by the Government of Catalonia.
