Gomis Asylum

From the beginning of the 20th century, Agullana has been a witness to the competency between the main well-to-do families of the town to create social projects. Cause of this competency resulted in the enormous building of brickwork and granite stone borders located at the entrance to town: the Gomis Asylum.

Around 1910, Lluís Gomis ordered the first project but died the same year and the project was forgotten. In 1918, Teresa Pallejà, Gomis' widow, married Josep Parellada i Faura and restarted the project. The first stone of the building was placed on November 9, 1919.

On April 30, 1932, Josep Parellada, in his wife's name, made a life donation to Josep Yrla, trustee delegate to Girona of the Government of Catalonia. The conditions of the donation are written in a document from April 20, 1932, and, among others things, it promises to finish the construction within one year and give preference to the elderly of Agullana and the nearby towns of Cantallops, Capmany, Darnius, La Jonquera, Maçanet de Cabrenys and La Vajol. The regional government of Girona accepted the donation and the architect Emili Blanc was in charge of the reforms.

In February 1937, the asylees and personnel arrived. In total, there were approximately one-hundred people. The asylum functioned for 32 years and the presence of the elderly women in the town became commonplace. Among them was Lídia Noguer, 'the good looking one'. On February 18, 1969, the asylees were moved to the Asylum of Girona, and Gomis was closed.
