During the Early Middle Ages (11th-12th centuries), Les Escaules comprised a row of farmhouses such as Can Miró, Can Dalmau, Mas Celler or Mas Vilademont, amongst others. The small town centre was centred in what is now known as Horts de la Caula where the old Romanesque church of Sant Martí stood (12th-13th centuries), which was possibly rebuilt on top of the ruins of the ancient monastery (9th-10th centuries). Due to the continual floods on the River La Muga meaning locals had to shelter in La Caula caves, it was decided to build new houses in a higher location around 300 m from Horts de la Caula where the present village now lies (14th-15th centuries). Nonetheless, the parish of Sant Martí and the cemetery remained in La Caula until the end of the 18th century.
